This letter appeared in the Prescott Daily Courier on December 13, 2010:
EDITOR:
This is an open letter to the folks in the Prescott area who, during the month of October, helped approximately 15 locally-owned and operated food and beverage establishments raise more than $6,000 in cash for three of our local food banks.
During this 2nd annual OctoberFeast month, a fundraising event sponsored by the Prescott Area Independents (PAI), our member establishments asked their patrons to join in and purchase OctoberFeast emblems at their various establishments and collected over 60 percent more than last year. A total of $10,300 has been raised by PAI for the Yavapai Food Bank, Open Door and Prescott Community Cupboard since PAI's inception in June 2009.
We independent operators believe in keeping our fundraising efforts and purchasing power local whenever possible. Because we are not chain or franchise operations, we do not have to send royalty or advertising fees back to "corporate headquarters" located in Ohio, Texas, Indiana or elsewhere around the nation. This affords us the ability to keep our dollars local and contribute back to our community as our way of thanking our locals for supporting us.
Because of those of you who supported your truly local PAI members and contributed to our emblem sales, PAI was able to help our local food banks in their efforts. Thank you to all who chose to patronize a local establishment and were able to contribute.
Roxane Nielsen
PAI Board Member
Prescott
